Assuming my Role as a Student Teacher

This was the 2nd week of my student teaching journey and I was able to begin teaching my first two classes on Friday! I am teaching two periods of Agro Environmental Science, so I was very excited to jump into the classroom and assume my new role as their student teacher.

After teaching period 2 and realizing my timing was off for certain activities, I was able to adjust my lesson plan and instruction for period 5 in a better manner. My ice breaker activity was 2 Truths and a Lie game and I realized I had a lot more time to complete this activity then I realized after teaching period 2. The students in period 2 seem to struggle with engagement and participation, so in the next few weeks I will work on creating lessons that are more hands-on and interactive so that they will hopefully be more motivated to learn. I had so much fun getting to introduce myself to my students and hearing some of their personal experiences. I'm really going to enjoy teaching this class and the different activities and labs I have set up for them.

After reflecting on my teaching performance on Friday, there are a few ways I can adjust the way I teach to better my students' learning. Mrs. Rice's feedback suggested including students' personal experiences into my lessons or activities. This is a great way to get them more interested into the lesson and motivates them to want to participate. I am also going to work on asking students what they know about a certain topic related to content, instead of just feeding them information. I may struggle with some content areas, but I will try to learn as much as possible prior to a lesson so that I can better teach my students the information.

I had another great week at Oley Valley and I am very excited to pick up Animal and Plant Biotech this upcoming week! I really enjoyed getting to know my new students and although I may have motivated them with candy for the 1st lesson, I hope that they will remain engaged and interested in what I'm teaching them. I've also been joining Mrs. Rice at Envirothon practices, where students have been learning about Pennsylvania wildlife for the upcoming contest. All of the topics they are practicing relate to what I'll be teaching in a few weeks, so it is great experience for me as I write my lesson plans. Thanks for reading and check back again next week to see my new blog post!
