Hey everyone! On Friday, I had the wonderful opportunity of being able to go in-person at Oley Valley to teach a National FFA LifeKnowledge lesson on skills that create career success. It was so nice being able to get in front of a few of the students that I will be teaching in just a few weeks!!! I was able to teach a 40 minute lesson to the FFA Leadership class, where they were able to identify skills that create a successful employee and then discuss local business that contribute to their community. I loved being able to walk around and interact with the students and I had a lot of fun finally going to Oley and getting to utilize the classroom.
This experience relates to what I know about teaching and learning because I was finally able to apply everything I learned this semester into my lesson. I was able to actually see how classroom management skills come into play and why it is very important to establish an environment that is welcoming yet the students still listen to what you have to say. Relating to the learning aspect, I ensured that my instruction was changed every ten minutes so that the students didn't get bored or lose attention throughout the lesson. This experience has taught me that although 40 minutes seems to be a while when planning and writing lesson plans, that time flies by in the classroom!
I learned a lot from this experience and from reflecting back on it with the feedback that Mrs. Rice offered me. Mrs. Rice told me a great piece of advice that I plan to incorporate into all my lessons and instructional planning. She said that towards the end of the lesson, a great way for students to make connections to what they just learned is to return back to the lesson objective slide and have them answer questions to see if they learned the material. She also told me how to facilitate asking students questions and to prompt them in a manner that encourages participation. I learned that it is okay to have a pause and to allow students to think of responses before moving on.
I can apply everything I learned from this experience to my student teaching internship that is coming just around the corner. I'm very excited to have learned some classroom technique advice from Mrs. Rice and finally getting able to introduce myself to my students. I was able to get a more in-depth tour of the facilitates and resources that Oley has to offer to their students that I can hopefully incorporate into my instructional planning to utilize. Teaching the LifeKnowledge lesson at Oley Valley was a very beneficial experience and I'm excited to use what I learned to become a better teacher.
