Time for Week 6

This past week was filled with many learning experiences in and out of the classroom and I can't believe we are about to begin week 6 already. From cohort pictures, to building a wall, to going to the Oley Valley Fair for a visit, it is safe to say that it has been busy! After reading the week 6 investment articles, I have three different questions related to the material.

My first question if for my future students and related to the Tweak your Teach: Dr. Tae's article about teaching and learning. The article states that true learning must be self-motivated and guided by responsible mentorship. The question I have for my future students is how can I motivate you as your teacher to want to learn? Knowing what motivates my students to come to class everyday can enable me to improve their learning through differentiated motivational strategies.

The article relating to small shifts in teacher talk emphasized that giving students a sense of ownership in their classroom by phrasing sentences in a particular way actually motivates them to learn more. Using a particular language with students when assigning them material or instructing them on a lab activity, makes them feel included in the decision making process that is happening inside the classroom. My next question is for my cooperating teacher Mrs. Rice: What are some examples that you implement into your classroom that give students opportunities to make decisions in their learning?

My last question is for my fellow cohort members and is about the Pursue Passion article we had to read for this week. I learned that giving students early opportunities to figure our what careers or passions they want to pursue is extremely important in high school. Ag programs are lucky in that career readiness is already a huge component of FFA and SAEs. My question is: What are some good ways to assess student interests related to different careers and how can we use that information to adjust our instruction in a beneficial manner?
